About the Authors:

Rev. Herbert Brown

Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Herbert Tyrone Brown served the Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church, Nashville, Tennessee for 34 years from (March 1988 – April 2022). He accomplished many accolades as the senior pastor of the church such as being instrumental in building a multi-million-dollar edifice, a significant increase in membership, developing over thirty church ministries, being licensed in 1971 and ordained in 1974, the first two women preachers at Great Saint John MBC, and selected the first five women trustees in 1995. He also ordained the first two licensed women preachers in 20.

Dr. Shirley Rainey-Brown

First Lady Emeritus, Dr. Shirley Brown of Greater Saint John Missionary Baptist Church served the congregation with her husband, Rev. Hebert Brown until his retirement in 2022, returning to the pastorship in 2023, she resumed her leadership role as First Lady. She currently serves as Professor of Sociology and former Dean of the School of Humanities and Behavioral Social Science and Assistant Vice President of Online Learning, at Fisk University, Nashville Tennessee.

Dr. Brown is a gospel singer, speaker, academician, administrator, author, and publisher of many articles in refereed professional journals, and several textbooks for classroom utilization. She has received several outstanding awards for her scholarly work in the field of sociology and community contributions.
