BOOK EDITORS

James A. Johnson, PhD, MPA, MSc is a medical social scientist who specializes in health systems analysis and development. He is a Professor in the School of Health Sciences at Central Michigan University where he teaches courses in comparative health systems and international health policy. He is a very active researcher and health science writer with over 100 journal articles and 20 books published. One book read worldwide is Comparative Health Systems: Global Perspectives where he and co-researchers analyzed the health systems of 20 different countries. He is also the co-author of the recently  Health Systems Thinking and the recently published Health Care USA. Eighteen of Professor Johnson’s books have been selected for the permanent collection of the National Library of Medicine and two for the Library of the World Health Organization. Dr. Johnson is past-editor of the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) Journal of Healthcare Management and a Contributing Editor for the Journal of Health and Human Services Administration, and global health editor for the Journal of Human Security and Resilience. Additionally, he has served on many boards including the Scientific Advisory Board of the National Diabetes Trust Foundation; American Public Health (APHA) Governing Council; Board of the Association of University Programs in Health Administration (AUPHA); Advisory Board of the Alliance for the Blind and Visually Impaired; Board President of Charleston Low Country AIDS Services; Advisory Board of the Joint Africa Working Group; Advisory Board of the Center for Collaborative Health Leadership; and Board of Advisors for Health Systems of America. He is a regular delegate to the World Health Congress and a member of the Global Health Council.  Dr. Johnson completed his Ph.D. at Florida State University.

Naomi E. DeShore, Lt Col (r), DHA, MPA, MS, PPCNP-BC, is Assistant Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD. Dr. DeShore has served in numerous Clinical Staff Officer positions as a pediatric nurse practitioner at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, Bethesda, for 23 years. Her areas of teaching include quality performance improvement, pediatric primary and emergency care, pediatric sedation, and organizational policy development. She holds academic appointments at The Herbert H. & Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions at Central Michigan University and College of Management and Human Potential at Walden University, chairing master thesis and dissertation committees. Internationally, Dr. Deshore has worked extensively in U.S. military and aerospace medicine assignments in Asia, Europe, and Benin, Africa. She also works on projects with the Belize-based NGO, Heart to Heart. Dr. DeShore’s activities range from providing international health field experiences and service-learning, lecturing, providing healthcare training and education to healthcare providers in rural communities, hospital engagement and educational seminars, and community-based primary care. Dr. DeShore served in various senior medical positions throughout her 28-year career in the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Retired from the USAF Reserves in May 2015, Lt Col DeShore’s last duty assignment was at the 908th Aeromedical Staging Squadron, Maxwell AFB, AL. As Chief Nurse Executive, she led the Nursing Services section managing public health programs. Lt Col DeShore deployed in support of Operation Desert Storm in 1991 and Operation Iraqi Freedom/ Enduring Freedom in 2003. She completed her DHA from Central Michigan University, majoring in health administration and international. She earned a MPA in executive leadership from American University, focusing on public administration and public sector leadership. She also earned a MS from the University of Maryland, focusing on pediatric advanced practice nursing and nursing education.
