Book Summary: Issues in the Modern American Economy Issues is written and designed for use in a one semester undergraduate course that examines either the political or economic history of the United States since 1900. The book identifies seven different sectors of the economy and examines past and present issues that have surfaced in each of these categories. It focuses the student reader on topics in the nation’s economic history that occurred since 1900 and that resonate with contemporary life. The book’s content highlights past and present trends and developments affecting the American people’s experiences with the issues of trade, employment and work, population, immigration, inflation and depression, and transportation. It relies heavily on graphic imagery to showcase observable trends regarding these issues.

Author’s Biography: John Montemerlo is an adjunct professor of Economics at Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Connecticut. Since 2014 he has taught a course titled the Modern American Economy that served as the stimulus for this work. He is a graduate of the Connecticut State University system and holds advanced degrees from both Trinity College and Wesleyan University. His earlier teaching experience was at Xavier High School in Middletown Connecticut where he taught elective courses in American Politics and AP Economics. In 2003 he received an outstanding educator award from Harvard University.
